“Songs from turbulent times”
Early music ensemble Musicke in the Ayre return to Wirksworth with a concert of English and Spanish songs from the reigns of Henry VIII through to Charles II, when Spain and England were often at war. Wirksworth’s very own Carmel Edwards will be accompanied by the ensemble’s founder Din Ghani on instruments of the period: lute, vihuela (a Spanish form of lute), and baroque guitar (a forerunner of the modern classical guitar). The programme includes songs to the lute from the Tudor court, 16th century vihuela songs and 17th century guitar songs from Spain, as well as continuo songs from Restoration England.
