We are very pleased to have received an Eco Church bronze award, as part of the Eco Church programme run by the Christian conservation charity A Rocha and supported by the national United Reformed Church. The award covers the following areas,
- Worship and teaching
- Management of church buildings
- Management of church land (although we don’t have any land around our building!)
- Community and global engagement
A small group of members of the church have carried out a survey – looking at what we do well and areas where we can improve. Although we have been thinking about green issues for a while this feels like the start of the journey for us as we have a lot more to think about. We can’t do on our own and have already made links with other local groups who care about the environment. Our Sunday Explorers, for example, visited the garden looked after by the Wirksworth Community Growers and we have taken food scraps from events to compost at the garden.
In doing this we are part of something bigger. We belong to the East Midlands Synod of the United Reformed Church, which has committed to work towards being an Eco Synod.
As we have moved back into lockdown, our Sunday Explorers have resumed meeting by Zoom. This week one of the activities was to make poppies to remember those who have died in wars across the world. Here are some of the creations.
Places of Worship and Communith Halls during November Lockdown in England. We have received this poster from the Moderator which will be placed also on our church notice board.
