Churches Together in Wirksworth & District presented SUPERHEROES – a Holiday Club for Primary School children from Mon. 21st to Thurs. 24th August. It was held at St Mary’s Church, Wirksworth when the children enjoyed games, songs, bible stories, crafts and had great fun learning about Daniel. Thanks are sincerely expressed to all who made it such a success.
9th and 10th September. In the United Reformed Church we were delighted to welcome Mo Walton with her wonderful display of jewellery and paintings. How lovely Mo set out her display. You can see more of Mo’s work on the web by typing in Mo Walton Jewellery and Paintings.
In the Glenorchy Centre (which is just opposite the Church) members/friends of the church served coffee, lunches, tea and cakes. We were pleased that friends “old and new” were able to join us. The weather was mixed but this did not deter and we felt that this year there were more people attending the Art & Architecture Trail.
Over 150 artists/craftsmen exhibited their work in private homes, historic buildings, gardens and courtyards, shop windows, churches and unconventional gallery spaces all over Wirksworth.
Everyone had a super time on the church outing to Southport on Saturday 22nd July and the weather was kind. Thanks to Ian for making all the arrangements. It was good too that everyone was able to see the Anthony Gormley Statues on the return journey. We all look forward to the next time.
Thank you so very much to everyone for supporting the table tennis event. The fantastic sum of £2,000 was raised for the Special Olympics City of Birmingham Learning Disability Sports Charity No. 800329 and West Derbyshire URC, but over and above that a wonderful time was had by everyone.
1st March – 13th April. This year the Lent meetings were on the subject of Art and Faith. The meetings consisted of an interview with each of five local artists about their work and how faith, in its wider sense, plays a part. The artists were mostly connected to the newly opened Haarlem Art Space at the southern end of the town in the old mill. www.haarlemartspace.co.uk
Through considered questions, we examined such areas as the source of the inspiration of each artist, how they maintain faith in themselves, how faith is portrayed in the work and whether it is influenced by any Christian narratives or metaphors. Each artist made themselves quite vulnerable as they shared the passion behind their creativity, giving us a fascinating insight into their lives and what has shaped them and their work.
The Official Opening of Haarlem Creative Art Space is on Saturday 29th July and this will be an Open Day for everyone to call in and enjoy the art work. Drinks and light refreshments from 11am to late. You are invited to “spread the word”.
Saturday 6th May at 4pm – A surprise party was held in the Glenorchy Centre to mark 10 years of Camilla’s ministry here in Wirksworth. (It’s hard to believe it’s 10 years – where does time go??!!) It was a lovely occasion enjoyed by Camilla and her family and all who were able to attend.
Saturday 27th May 10am – 2pm – “Open Door” was certainly fitting when we opened our church for coffee and scones. Visitors were invited to light a candle in our prayer corner for Manchester and take strength from the words of two prayers there.
Many stories were shared as people came to rest from the rain and sun, filling our church with laughter and smiles. At the close of the day, our faithful, hard working crew, had raised £200 for church.
Sat 20th to Sun 21st May. A very successful church weekend in the Glenorchy Centre when the theme was the Holy Spirit. It was a great weekend shared by all ages. We look forward to the next time.
Saturday 6th May at 7.30pm – We were pleased to welcome the celebrated world renowned classical guitarist, Carlos Bonell to our church when he performed a varied programme. Carlos received a standing ovation with encores and he said how much he had enjoyed performing here in our church at Wirksworth. www.carlosbonell.com

An Easter Morning Sunrise Service, arranged by Churches Together in Wirksworth and District, was held at the Star Disc in Wirksworth. It was a wonderful beginning to Easter Day.
